Academic Communication

A key element to academic success at Pitt is understanding how to appropriately communicate with Pitt instructors and administrators.  Below are few tips and reminders.  Email is the official means of communication at Pitt.  Due to this, incoming students should use professional messaging when addressing messages to Pitt peers, faculty and staff.  
  • Utilize the @pitt.edu email address for any email communication.  
  • Regularly check the contents of the @pitt.edu inbox.  
  • Within the body of the emails, include a greeting, the purpose of the message and an appropriate signature.  
  • Identify yourself with your full name and PeopleSoft ID.  
Classroom Expectations.  
  • Do not be afraid to ask the instructor questions.  
  • Classroom participation is often a portion of one's grade.  This may include sharing one's opinion or participating in classroom discussions.  
  • Communicate directly with the instructors or professors early on in regards to personal issues or condition.  
  • Class attendance is often mandatory.  Consult the course syllabus per course.  Each class may have different policies.
