Exchange vs. Guest

Although non-degree students may either study abroad at Pitt as an exchange or guest student, there are differences between the two categories. Only students formally nominated by an exchange partner may study as an exchange student. All other non-degree students are considered guest students.

Exchange Student

Guest Student

An exchange student is nominated by a listed exchange partner or consortia to study at Pitt for one or two semesters.  The student will pay regular tuition and fees to his/her home institution.  In turn, a Pitt student will pay Pitt tuition and fees to "swap spots" with the incoming student.    A guest student is welcome to study at Pitt for a single semester and transfer respective course credits to his/her home institution.  Unlike an exchange student, a guest student is required to pay out-of-state Pitt tuition and fees.

In specific circumstances, Pitt has formal agreements with other universities or organizations to accept guest students for more than a semester. Examples of such a guest student program include the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program or School of Nursing's relationship with Capital Medical University.
