Transportation & Getting Around

Port Authority Bus

Pittsburgh has become an easier city to navigate.  Students studying on the Oakland campus have the convenience of several modes of transportation, in addition to the Port Authority buses as well as access to ride-sharing applications.  For the various options, see below.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)

The Pittsburgh International Airport is approximately a 30-minute car ride away from the Pittsburgh campus.

Amtrak Train

Although there are limited train routes to and from Pittsburgh, students have the option of travelling on Amtrak trains.  Once on the East Coast of the U.S., students may have access to the Northeast Train Routes, which includes New York City, Boston, Washington D.C. and others.

Intercity Bus Services

Aside from travel by plane and train, students may also travel to other cities by intercity buses.  The services by bus may include the Mega Bus or Greyhound services.  Check their websites for more details.

Port Authority of Allegheny County

Through the Panther Card, registered incoming students will have access to Port Authority transportation to anywhere within Allegheny County.  This not only includes the city buses but also "the T," which is the lightrail system.  Students should review the list of available mobile applications to find the appropriate transpotation lines and routes.

Pitt Shuttle & Other University Shuttles

Pitt has shuttles to take students around the Pittsburgh campus.  Like Port Authority, the Pitt Shuttle also has a real-time Pitt shuttle tracker online.  Addtionally, Pitt students are eligible to ride the Chatham shuttles at no cost, whereas after 7 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays, Pitt students may also ride the CMU shuttles, at no cost.

Ride-sharing Applications

In addition to standard taxi services, students in Pittsburgh may also consider the use of ride-sharing applications such as Lyft or Uber.  With either application, a smart phone is required for usage.  For information on costs, please see the individual websites.

Bike Share

Around the Pittsburgh city, there are a number of bike share stations for individuals to rent bikes from.  For more information on the program, please visit the Health Ride Pittsburgh website.
